Artist Statement
My practice as an artist comes from a place of profound connection and caring for the world around me. I have long been interested in issues of gender inequity, animal rights, environmental concerns, and issues of abuse, submission and control. It all seems to boil down to our capacity to compassionately connect with the world around us. In my current body of work, I am expounding on the theme that, "The meek shall inherit the earth." I create unfired clay creatures, which are built and displayed in dense groupings. The characters that I depict, my army of the meek, encounter situations in which they are incapable of resolving or changing conflict. My intent is to create a world that is clearly separate from our everyday, but mirrors our own experience enough to cause the viewer to question their role in the scenario. The forms are meant to be uncomfortable and other. As the artist, I function as a sort of twisted creator goddess, whose presence is incredibly important and always implied. The unfired nature of the clay forces the work into a state that is vulnerable, ephemeral, and deeply ingrained with the potential for change. My forms exist precariously between two outcomes, destruction or salvation. Failure is a given without the intervention of our collective potential for empathy.
